Zipping Neutron Eyes Sandown Cup

By Jeff Collerson
ZIPPING Neutron, who broke the LADBROKES GARDENS 715m record on Friday night but held it for only 30 minutes, will now tackle this month's heats of the G1 Sandown Cup.

Raced by South Australia's Tim Aloisi, ZIPPING Neutron was sent to dual Million Dollar Chase winning trainer Peter Lagogiane for the Ladbrokes 715 series and after a strong finishing third in his heat he led throughout to win a top grade 715m event at The Gardens on Friday.

ZIPPING Neutron's time of 41.34 broke the previous record of 41.40, set by Cool Bourbski in December 2021, but was reduced to new figures of 41.23 when Valpolicella led all the way to take out the Ladbrokes 715 just 30 minutes later.

"I sent ZIPPING Neutron over to Peter for the race at The Gardens and the dog will fly back to me in Adelaide on Tuesday,'' Aloisi said.

"I'll take him to Melbourne for the Sandown Cup and the plan is then to send ZIPPING Neutron back to Peter for a staying campaign in Brisbane.''

A year ago Aloisi bought ZIPPING Neutron as a performed dog from leading NSW breeder Marty Hallinan and the greyhound, who will be four in November, has now had 71 starts for 33 wins and 17 placings.

Aloisi is quickly becoming one of Australia's most successful owners, having also recently purChased the classy Victorian bitch Isle's Entity, who has won 12 of 36 races.

"I train four dogs in Adelaide but own 15 and have dogs racing in NSW, Victoria and SA,'' Aloisi said.

"Ten years ago I was at a pub watching the greyhounds on TV and on the spur of the moment decided to get into the sport by purchasing my first dog.

"Now it has grown into an out-of-control hobby.''

ZIPPING Neutron's visit to The Gardens was not Aloisi's first foray into a big race in NSW, as he sent Avalanche to trainer Jason Mackay in February 2021, and that dog led all the way to beat $1.33 favourite Wow in a heat of the Richmond Derby.

Avalanche finished sixth to Incapacitated in the G2 final.

Perfect Dawn turns three next month but was having only her 22nd start when she recorded her 11th win on Friday at Wentworth Park.

The brilliant short course bitch, owned and trained by retired butcher Jeff Alaban, has been a work in progress since winning on debut over 297m at Dapto in February 2023.

On Friday Perfect Dawn led throughout from box one, winning comfortably in a slick 16.08, the fastest time of the day.

"She has been injury-prone from day one, and her litter sister Sweet Nitro is exactly the same,'' Alaban said.

"Perfect Dawn is very quick but she goes so fast early that 350 to 380m is as far as she wants to race.

"Sweet Nitro, who has won seven from 20 starts but has not been able to race this year, is not quite as quick early but is stronger and will run 400m or more.

"When I bought these bitches at five months old their breeder told me they wouldn't reach their peak until they were two-and-a-half years old.

"But apart from getting them injury-free, it can be difficult finding races for them.

"I put in four or five nominations at provincial tracks for Perfect Dawn without success until she won on Friday.

"Being in race three at Wentworth Park helped because Perfect Dawn and Sweet Nitro are both 'hypo' greyhounds, when they are drawn in late races they play up in the kennels and don't always go as good.''

Alaban, a successful hobby trainer for over 40 years, retired as a butcher 18 months ago to concentrate on his greyhounds.
