Class Drop Suits Might Have Been

By Jeff Collerson
Last Friday Might Have Been was competing against Australia's best long-distance greyhounds but on Wednesday night, he plunges in class to take on just five rivals in the fifth grade GRNSW Stayers Series at Richmond.

Might Have Been will be a hot favourite when he exits box two in the 722m event, following his seventh to Valpolicella in track record time over 715m at LADBROKES GARDENS.

Might Have Been was a surprise all-the-way $31 heat winner of the Ladbrokes 715 but bungled the start in the final and was well back throughout.

"He needed to come out running to have any chance in a hot field like that,'' his trainer Minnie Finn said.

Although Might Have Been's record suggests he is better suited drawn off the track, Finn said she was happy with his box two draw on Wednesday.

"No, from the 722m boxes at Richmond I would rather see him boxed near the fence,'' Finn said.

If he wins on Wednesday night, Might Have Been will take his earnings to $69,020, contributing further to the remarkable prizemoney being accrued by this dog and his six litter siblings.

Poco Dorado won 32 races and $361,000 for her owners Denis Donoghue and Peter McDermott, but her offspring sired by Flying Ricciardo and whelped in February, 2022, have already amassed over $421,000.

Poco Dorado's owners race the Minnie Finn-trained Gets Late Eary (12 wins), Both Bowers Ace (11), Poco Rico (10), Secrets Revealed (nine), Ain't Waiting (seven) and Might Have Been (six) while Joe Comito owns and trains their brother Steal A March, whose two Wentworth Park wins have netted him $8370.

While Might Have Been appeals as Wednesday night's best bet, not far behind him is the perfectly drawn Totally Emgrand, who has box one in the GRNSW Puppy Auction Final over 622m.

In last week's heats, Totally Emgrand drew box five and after being second most of the way, finished strongly to defeat Canya Dazzle by more than four lengths in 35.73.

The other heat was taken out by Puppeteer who came from box six to score in 36.06.

Puppeteer has drawn box six again in the final so may need luck early if he is to defeat Totally Emgrand.

Trainer Luke Azzopardi said: "Totally Emgrand has a terrific draw.

"So long as he doesn't flop out of the boxes completely he should go close to winning.

"He doesn't have to lead, from box one he should be no worse than second or third early and be hard to hold off from there.

"I believe Totally Emgrand could develop into a stayer and after I take him through his grades over middle journeys I plan to step him up in distance.''

Although he has won just once in five Richmond 520m races, the Kerry Drynan-trained Copious looms as Wednesday's best value wager.

Copious has box eight in heat one of the 520m Ladbrokes 5th Grade series and although he would be better suited drawn on the rails he has worn the pink rug to victory on two occasions.

And as a winner of six 520m races at Wentworth Park, Copious looks well graded in Wednesday night's fifth class event.

He has posted a fast 29.71, albeit from box one, over 520m at Wentworth Park, and is trained at Richmond, where his best time is a flying 29.55, much quicker than any of his rivals this week.
